Blackjack Basics
Blackjack is played against the dealer; with other players at the table having no bearing on your hand versus the dealer. Who ever is closest to 21 without going over, wins the hand. If you end up with the same total, then it’s a push. Face cards are worth 10, aces are worth 1 or 11 (which ever works best for your hand, and it can change) and all other cards are worth their value from 2 to 10. Sounds very simple. In actual fact, Blackjack is one of the more simple games to learn.
To start the game, the player will make a bet before seeing their cards. Most tables in Las Vegas will have a minimum bet of $5 to $10 (sometimes upwards of $25 minimum at a bigger casino on a busy night). This helps the casino ensure that they don’t “waste” valuable seats on players only looking to spend a few dollars. But lucky for you, online casinos don’t have that same issue and you can typically find blackjack tables as cheap as 1 cent.
Once your bets have been placed, both you and the dealer will receive two cards. One of the dealers cards will be face upon, the other one face down. Both of your cards will be face up. Here’s decision time as you have many options to choose from: if you are happy with your cards you can “stand”, if you want another card you can “hit”, if you want only one more card you can “double down” (usually when you have a 10 or 11, but see details later), and if you have two identical cards you can “split” and play two hands.
You continue to play your cards until you “stand”, but after the first selection you can no longer double down.
The dealer on the other hand, doesn’t have a “choice” but rather he has to follow the casino rules as to whether he hits or stands (he can’t double or split). Typically the casino will hit until he gets 17, with some casinos hitting on “soft 17” – s soft hand is with one ace as the ace can be a 1 or 11.
Variations of Blackjack
There are different variations of blackjack which usually include how many decks, what the casino hits on, and what they pay for blackjack (usually if you hit blackjack, or 21 on the first hand you get paid 3 to2). Sometimes a casino will offer side games where you make an extra bet for pairs or certain hands, but any gimmicky bet usually has poor odds.
For most players, the key is to learn basic strategy, which if played properly will give the casino about a 1% edge on the player. Remember that this strategy is developed over playing millions of hands, it’s entirely possible that within any one session of blackjack that the odds will either be in your favor of completely against you.
Blackjack Strategy Card
For those that are still learning the strategy, there is a basic strategy card that we’ve included. All you need to so if look at what the dealer is showing and what you are showing and it tells you what the proper strategy call is.
If you are playing proper strategy and losing, don’t beat yourself up over it. If you’re all over the map and not playing anything close to proper strategy then all we can say is What the Hell is Wrong With You?
